Project: Cross-Country AIX Production Environment Migration

Team: Virtuserv Application & Infrastructure Virtualization Engineers

The Challenge: A High-Stakes, Cross-Country Relocation

A world leader in music-based entertainment, operated its critical AIX-based production infrastructure from its data center in Virginia. To consolidate resources and enhance operational efficiency, they made the strategic decision to migrate their entire environment to its primary data center in California.

The challenge was immense. The project required migrating complex, legacy applications and their underlying infrastructure over 2,700 miles. These systems supported core business functions and could not sustain significant disruption. The primary directive was to execute this complex migration with nominal downtime, ensuring that their production operations, which are active 24/7, would be seamlessly restored on the new coast. Success demanded a flawless transition with zero data loss and absolute certainty of a successful restoration.

The Solution: Meticulous Planning and Flawless Execution

The Virtuserv engineering team developed a multi-phased, risk-averse strategy designed to deconstruct this monumental task into a manageable and predictable sequence of events.

  1. Environment Replication and Validation: Weeks before the migration window, our team built a parallel, fully replicated AIX environment in the California data center. We worked closely with our client’s application owners to conduct rigorous testing and performance validation, ensuring the new infrastructure met and exceeded the benchmarks of the existing Virginia environment.
  2. Continuous Data Synchronization: To minimize the cutover window, we established a high-speed, secure data synchronization link between the two data centers. Using advanced replication technologies, we maintained a near real-time mirror of our client’s production data in California. This meant that on migration day, only the final, incremental data changes would need to be transferred.
  3. Engineered for Zero Impact: The migration was strategically scheduled over the long holiday weekend of July 4th, 2022, to coincide with a period of lower business activity. Our plan included bringing down the production environments in a controlled sequence, performing the final data sync, and then systematically bringing the services online in California. A comprehensive post-migration checklist, co-developed with our client’s stakeholders, was used to validate every application and service.
  4. Fail-Safe “Swing-Back” Mechanism: Confidence is key in any migration. We engineered a robust fail-safe plan that would allow us to “swing back” and reactivate the Virginia environment within minutes if any unforeseen issues arose in California. This provided our client’s leadership with the assurance needed to proceed with the final cutover.

The Result: A Seamless Transition and Strengthened Partnership

The AIX migration was an unqualified success, delivering on every project goal and solidifying Virtuserv’s role as a trusted technology partner.

  • Nominal Downtime Achieved: The entire production environment was successfully brought down, migrated, and restored in under four hours, a remarkable achievement for a cross-country migration of this complexity.
  • Zero Data Loss or Disruption: The meticulous planning and data synchronization strategy resulted in a seamless transition with 100% data integrity. Our client’s business operations resumed on the new infrastructure without any negative impact.
  • Enhanced Performance and Stability: The new environment in California, built on modern infrastructure, provided our client with improved performance, greater stability, and a more robust platform for future growth.
  • Project Delivered on Time and with Confidence: By executing the migration over a holiday weekend and completing it well within the planned window, we ensured minimal disruption to U.S. and international business operations, demonstrating our commitment to partnership and precision planning.

This project stands as a testament to the Virtuserv team’s deep expertise in infrastructure virtualization and our unwavering commitment to executing complex, high-stakes projects with excellence.
