The Challenge: Ensuring Clinical Continuity with a Modern Infrastructure

Our partner operates at the forefront of in-home patient care, a mission where clinician access to secure, reliable data is paramount to patient outcomes. Their existing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), running on a traditional VMware vSphere environment, was facing increasing complexity and scalability challenges. The infrastructure lacked the operational simplicity and robust, active disaster recovery capabilities required to support their critical 24/7 clinical operations and future growth plans.

The strategic mandate was clear: architect a new VDI foundation that would deliver exceptional performance, simplify IT management, and provide a financial-grade High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solution to ensure clinicians always have access to patient data, no matter the circumstance.

The Solution: A Strategic Migration to a Resilient, Hyper-Converged Foundation

Our team architected and executed a comprehensive infrastructure transformation, migrating Landmark Health’s entire VDI environment from VMware vSphere to a state-of-the-art, multi-datacenter Nutanix Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) platform.

Our technical execution was methodical and multi-faceted:

  1. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Design: We designed and implemented a Nutanix AHV environment spanning two data centers. This architecture was purpose-built for active HA and DR, eliminating infrastructure silos and creating a single, resilient pool of resources to host the mission-critical Horizon VDI workloads.
  2. Unified Management and Monitoring: To provide a single pane of glass for the entire stack, we deployed a scale-out Nutanix Prism Central architecture. This provided Landmark’s IT team with unified system management, deep performance monitoring, and robust reporting capabilities across both sites.
  3. Advanced VDI Resiliency: We deployed the VMware Horizon VDI platform directly onto the Nutanix AHV foundation. Critically, we implemented Horizon Cloud Pod Architecture (CPA), federating the VDI environment across the two Nutanix datacenters. This configuration enables seamless load balancing and automatic failover for clinician sessions, ensuring continuity of access.
  4. Granular Data Protection: To protect critical patient data and clinical application workloads, we integrated Zerto’s backup and replication solution. Zerto’s continuous data protection technology provided near-synchronous replication between the sites, reducing the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) to seconds and minimizing any potential for data loss.
  5. Flawless Workload Migration: The culmination of the project was the systematic and carefully planned workload migration from the legacy VMware vSphere environment to the new Nutanix AHV platform. Our team successfully transitioned the entire clinical VDI user base with minimal disruption, ensuring a seamless experience for the clinicians relying on these systems.

The Result: A Paradigm Shift in Performance, Resiliency, and Operational Efficiency

This strategic platform modernization delivered transformative results, directly enhancing our partner’s ability to provide outstanding patient care.

  • Uninterrupted Clinical Operations: The active-active, multi-datacenter design for both the Nutanix underlay and the Horizon CPA overlay provides an exceptional level of uptime. Clinicians now have resilient, uninterrupted access to their desktops and patient records, even in the event of a full site failure.
  • Strengthened Business Continuity & DR: With the combination of Nutanix’s resilient architecture and Zerto’s continuous data protection, our partner’s DR posture has been fundamentally upgraded. Their Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and RPOs have been reduced from hours to mere minutes.
  • Simplified IT Management: The migration to Nutanix HCI and the centralized control offered by Prism Central has drastically simplified day-to-day operations. The IT team can now manage their entire VDI stack from a single interface, freeing up valuable time to focus on strategic, value-add initiatives.
  • Improved Total Cost of Ownership (TCO): By consolidating onto the efficient Nutanix HCI platform and moving away from a traditional 3-tier architecture, our partner has significantly reduced its data center footprint and associated costs in power, cooling, and complex software licensing.
  • Foundation for Future Growth: Our partner now operates on a highly scalable, resilient, and efficient platform, perfectly positioned to support their organizational growth, onboard new clinical teams, and deploy the next generation of healthcare applications with confidence.
